A DETECTIVE constable who worked in the Metropolitan Police’s sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse department has been jailed for more than five years for a string of child sexual abuse offences.
Chris Maitland, of Widey View, Plymouth, was sentenced this afternoon at Southwark Crown Court to five years and four months behind bars for the 14 child sex offences.
Maitland, 40, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of sexually touching a child under the age of 13.
The officer was found to possess more than 800 indecent images and videos, including those from the most serious category A.
The unit Maitland worked for, known as Sapphire, investigates rapes and serious sexual violence.
The command team had a child abuse investigation team tasked with safeguarding children.
The Metropolitan Police Service said Maitland was off duty at the time of the offences and was currently suspended from duty.
