Met Police officer who was meant to protect kids jailed for child sex abuse

A DETECTIVE constable who worked in the Metropolitan Police’s sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse department has been jailed for more than five years for a string of child sexual abuse offences.

 Chris Maitland, of Widey View, Plymouth, was sentenced this afternoon at Southwark Crown Court to five years and four months behind bars for the 14 child sex offences.
Maitland, 40, pleaded guilty last month to two counts of sexually touching a child under the age of 13.

He had previously admitted 12 charges of taking and making indecent images of a child.The perverted policeman was first arrested in November last year on suspicion of possession and distribution of indecent images of children.
The officer was found to possess more than 800 indecent images and videos, including those from the most serious category A.

He was then re-arrested in March this year on suspicion of sexual touching in 2005 after the offences were discovered to have been captured on film.
The unit Maitland worked for, known as Sapphire, investigates rapes and serious sexual violence.
The command team had a child abuse investigation team tasked with safeguarding children.
The Metropolitan Police Service said Maitland was off duty at the time of the offences and was currently suspended from duty.
